MALAPPURAM: The Crime Branch has named four policemen as accused in the case in which a young man named Tamir Jifri died in police custody in Tanur. The crime branch submitted its first charge sheet against four Dansaf officers in Parappanangadi Judicial First Class Magistrate Court. Although the crime branch started an investigation into the case on August 2, neither the accused were found nor the police had been made accused. The CBI investigation has not been started yet.

The first accused in the case, Senior CPO Jinesh of Tanur police station, the second accused CPO Albin Augustine of Parappanangadi station, the third accused CPO Abhimanyu of Kalpakanchery station and the fourth accused CPO Vipin of Tirurangadi station have been charged with murder. It is indicated that more accused will be added in the coming days.

On the night of July 31, Tamir and others were arrested by the police from Chelari under Thenhipalam police station in Kozhikode. Tamir's brother, Harris Geoffrey, filed a petition in the High Court that Tamir was brutally beaten by the police and that he died in custody on the morning of August 1. The petition also states that the post-mortem report implicates the police. The court heard the petition and ordered to produce the case diary and inform about the progress of the investigation.
