AHMEDABAD: The Indian Meteorological Department has announced red alert in seven districts following heavy rains in Gujarat. 12,000 people have been evacuated due to flood-like situation in south-central Gujarat. Panchmahal, Dahod, Kheda, Aravalli, Mahisagar, Banaskantha and Sabarkantha are on red alert. Major dams, including the Sardar Sarovar, have been released and rivers are overflowing.
The heavy rain since Saturday has unexpectedly led to a flood-like situation in the state. Evacuation of those trapped by the rains to safer places continues. Around 250 people in Vadodhara and around 300 people in Baruch have been shifted to safer places by national and state disaster management teams. Holiday has been announced for all educational institutions in Narmada district.
Meanwhile, heavy rains are continuing in Madhya Pradesh as well. Eight members of a family were washed away in Jabua district after ignoring warnings to leave their homes.
