IRINJALAKUDA: A differently-abled man, who had deposited 14 lakhs in Karuvannur Bank and asked for 5 lakhs for an emergency surgery, was given only 1.9 lakh rupees. That too in installments. As his condition worsened, the surgery was performed. However, he succumbed to death on September 30. It was Karuvannur Thelappilly native Sasi (53) who met with this misfortune. Now, his family members have come forward with a complaint against the bank.
Sasi's arms and legs had gotten paralyzed due to a nerve issue. While undergoing treatment for this, his blood pressure suddenly increased. When he was rushed to the hospital, the doctors said that he should immediately undergo a brain surgery. Following this, the family contacted the secretary of the bank and demanded money. However, the reply was that the bank would give only 9000 rupees. The bank eventually handed over Rs 1 lakh following the intervention of those, including the ward member. After the surgery, Sasi spent nine days in ICU and thirty days in palliative care. However, the bank gave only a total of Rs 1,90,000 in several installments. Fourteen lakhs were deposited in the names of Sasi and his mother Thanga. 77-year-old Thanga has a blood clot in her head. About Rs 3000 per month is needed for her treatment. The family had sold their land and deposited the money in the bank when the mother and son fell ill. They hoped they could seek treatment using the interest from the bank.
The family had taken loans from various places for Sasi's treatment. His sister Mini Raju said that they needed the money from the bank to repay the loans. Sasi's father, who was a clay worker, died years ago.
