Heavy rain continues in state; 75-year-old woman goes missing in Pathanamthitta, extensive damages

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Heavy rain continues in various districts of the state. In the wake of the rain, there is widespread damages in southern Kerala. There are heavy mountain floods in Pathanamthitta. Heavy rain is continuing in Thiruvalla and Konni. This is the heaviest rainfall received in recent times. A 75-year-old woman from Naranganam went missing after being swept away by the currents.

Pathanamthitta received 210 mm of rain in two hours yesterday. Experts do not rule out the possibility of a light cloudburst here. There was a landslide at Kottathatti hills in Kozhencherry. There was extensive damage to crops due to mountain floods caused by landslides in Chenneerkkara. There was waterlogging on Pathanamthitta Thiruvalla road, Punalur Muvattupuzha road, Konni, Vakayar and Koodal. There was a mountain flood in the Chuzhilikode area.


A red alert was issued in Pathanamthitta yesterday. Heavy rains lashed Sabarimala Sannidhanam and Kanana region. Trees and soil fell on the road on the Kumali Munnar Road in Idukki, disrupting traffic. Heavy waterlogging has formed near the Kumali hanging bridge. Neyyatinkara, Nedumangad and hilly areas of the capital city received heavy rain.

Thiruvananthapuram also received heavy rain. Due to heavy rain, the road is flooded at many places. To solve the waterlogging in Chakkai, the pit taken to one side for the construction of the drain was filled with water. The soil on the side of the pit is also falling into it. Ponmudi, Kallar and Mangayam eco-tourist centers have been closed. Gourishapattom bridge has been completely submerged. After the rains, the coastal areas are hit by sea erosion.


Red and orange alerts have been announced in various districts of Kerala in the wake of continuous rain. The central meteorological department has issued a red alert in Pathanamthitta as there is a possibility of heavy rainfall. Thiruvananthapuram and Idukki were on orange alert yesterday. Chance of heavy rain at isolated places has been predicted. Heavy rainfall means rainfall of more than 204.4 mm in 24 hours.
