BJP secures decisive victory in Chhattisgarh elections, Congress faces setbacks

NEW DELHI: In a dramatic turn of events, the BJP clinched a significant lead in Chhattisgarh's assembly elections, leaving Congress leaders stunned. The BJP surged past 50 seats, a revelation that shook the confidence of Congress, previously assured of retaining power based on promising exit poll forecasts.

Confident in their majority, Congress leaders Ramesh Chennithala and Ajay Maken were taken aback as the BJP's lead widened. Despite expressing confidence in their chances, Chennithala acknowledged uncertainties about BJP's potential to seize power in the state.

Initially, Congress seemed in control as the counting commenced, but the BJP swiftly gained ground, leading the race within an hour. As the morning progressed, both parties secured over 40 seats, signaling a close contest. However, by 11:30 am, the BJP solidified its lead, surpassing the crucial mark of 46 seats for an absolute majority, later crossing the 50-seat threshold, contrary to any survey's predictions.

The Congress faced setbacks during the campaign, notably involving controversies like the banned Mahadev gambling app, allegedly linked to a massive sum of Rs 500 crore paid to Chief Minister Bhupesh Bagel's election fund. Additionally, concerns arose over the absence of O.B.C. reservation enforcement in medical colleges and the failure to grant constitutional status to the O.B.C. Commission during Congress's prolonged rule.

Corruption allegations further plagued the Congress, ranging from SC appointments to coal deals and ration distribution. Revelations of substantial corruption, including a staggering Rs 2000 crore in liquor sales, tainted Bagel's government. Notably, the J. Bhupay QR code, exposing corruption, gained significant attention.

Criticism surfaced regarding the alleged neglect of the Jan, Jungle, and Jameen scheme, intended for the welfare of tribals constituting over 30 percent of the population, indicating a disregard for their rights and well-being.

The BJP's sweeping victory, unforeseen by any pre-election survey, marks a turning point in Chhattisgarh's political landscape, as the Congress grapples with multiple challenges and controversies.
