KOCHI: There was a widespread protest in the state against the installation of survey stones as part of the survey for the K-Rail project. The protest was done by uprooting yellow survey stones installed by the K-Rail authorities. The strike samiti had planted a banana tree in one of the holes that was left after the uprooting of the survey stones. The fruit was harvested today and a banana cluster was auctioned and sold for Rs 40,300.
Banana planted in the K-rail pit near Ernakulam Aluva Pukkattupady was harvested. A cluster of mysore poovan/Palayankodan bananas weighing eight kg was taken to the Aluva market and sold in the auction. The members of the strike committee are of the opinion that the banana cluster fetched such a price because of its history of struggle against K Rail.
The auction was conducted under the leadership of Aluva MLA Anwar Sadat. Local people and members of the strike committee participated in the auction. In the excitement of the auction, the price crossed 10,000, but even the strike committee did not expect it to reach 40,000 rupees.
After fierce bidding, the banana cluster was auctioned for Rs.40,300. It was bought at the record price by Nishad, a native of Aluva Pukkattupady. The members informed that the strike committee will consult and decide what to do with the amount received in the auction.
