THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Women's Commission Chairperson Adv P Sathi Devi has proposed recommending to the state government the imposition of a tax on lavish weddings. She emphasized the need to establish a limit on dowries during a seminar at Kulathupuzha Grama Panchayat Hall, part of the Kollam District-level Scheduled Tribe Regional Camp.
Highlighting the prevalent issue of dowry abuse particularly in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts, Sathi Devi expressed concern over societal perceptions that pressure families to prioritize gold and extravagant celebrations over the well-being of girls. She stressed the importance of addressing the mindset that views girls as liabilities.
The Women's Commission plans to advocate for a tax on luxury weddings as a measure to curb excessive spending. Sathi Devi underscored that tackling the dowry menace requires collective responsibility emphasizing the necessity for societal change and individual decisions against this harmful practice.
While acknowledging the legal limitations of banning dowry outright, Sathi Devi urged couples experiencing difficulties in their marriages especially after opulent ceremonies, to seek compromise and adjustment. She voiced concern about the distressing trend of girls resorting to suicide when unable to cope with marital challenges.
Emphasizing the evolving outlook of girls on life, Sathi Devi called for a shift in parental mindsets. She encouraged fostering an environment where girls can freely express their opinions asserting that women should have the opportunity to realize their inherent potential.
