Price hike on freedom food; 21 items affected, govt accepts recommendation

THIRUVANANTHPURAM: Jail Superintendent Balram Kumar Upadhyaya has issued an order to increase prices of food in prisons, sold to the public as Freedom Food. The prices of 21 items including rice and chicken, have risen by Rs 5 to Rs 30. Chapati prices remain unchanged.

The revised prices are now in effect.

Most vegetables are grown in prisons, while other items are procured through Supplyco. The Jail Department cites the necessity for the price increase in daily-use items, a recommendation the government has accepted.
