Woman seriously burnt in husband's attempt to set her on fire, admitted to hospital in critical condition

ALAPPUZHA: In an alarming incident near Cherthala Hospital in Alappuzha at 9:50 am today, Arathi (32) sustained severe burns after her husband, Shyamjith (42), poured petrol on her and set her on fire. Arathi, a resident of Kadakkarapilli was riding a scooter when she was accosted by Shyamjith. He also suffered burns in the altercation.

Both have been rushed to Vandanam Medical College Hospital for treatment. Arathi, employed at a private money transfer firm and Shyamjith amidst marital discord had been living separately.

Authorities are yet to ascertain the motive behind the attack and have announced their intention to gather statements from relatives regarding the incident.
