BARCELONA: Brazilian footballer Dani Alves has been awarded a jail term for raping a woman at a nightclub. The court in Spain sentenced the superstar to four and a half years in prison for the incident that took place in December 2022.
Dani Alves raped the young woman inside the toilet of the nightclub. In addition to the jail sentence, the court also sentenced slapped the footballer with a fine of one and a half million euros.
The 40-year-old footballer had initially denied sexually assaulting the woman. In a statement, the court said there was evidence other than the victim's testimony that proved that she had been raped. However, when evidence turned against him, he admitted to raping the woman under the influence of alcohol.
Dani Alves is one of the best defenders in Brazil and world football. The footballer, who is currently in remand, is gearing up to file an appeal against the verdict.
He has made more than 300 appearances for Barcelona. He played for Brazil in three World Cups. Apart from Barcelona, he has also played for PSG and Juventus. Meanwhile, the Mexican club Pumas cancelled the contract with the footballer after the allegations against him surfaced.
