THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Nayas’s first wife Regina has been implicated in the gruesome death of a pregnant woman and her newborn in Thiruvananthapuram’s Karakkamandapam. The woman has been charged with causing the death of an unborn child and involuntary manslaughter. She will be the second accused in the case. As per police details, Regina is still at large.
Nemom police also arrested Shihabuddin from Ernakulam, who gave acupuncture treatment to the victim in the incident. The arrest was based on the statement of the victim’s husband Nayas that the doctor denied hospital treatment for Shameera. In September, the Special Branch reported that Shihabuddin was conducting fake treatment under the guise of acupuncture.
Shihabuddin, a native of Venjaramoodu was running a clinic at Beemapally. The special branch back in September took up the investigation after many reports emerged about Shihabuddin extorting money from people with the promise of curing diabetes. Albeit the initial investigation, neither the police nor the health department took action on the report.
Nayas, a native of Poonthura, is in remand after being arrested by police in the case. He has confessed to the police about denying proper hospital treatment for Shemeera. Nayas's wife Shemeera and the newborn baby died during childbirth at Tirumangalam Lane near Nemom Pazhaya Karakkamandapam last Tuesday evening.
The locals had earlier informed the health workers, Nemom Police and Residents Association officials about Nayas not providing treatment for Shemeera who was fully pregnant at that time.
