Auteur director Kumar Shahani passes away at 83

MUMBAI: Eminent director and screenwriter Kumar Shahani passed away on Sunday. He was 83. Shahani breathed his last in Kolkata due to age-related ailments.

Shahani is renowned for his excellent filmography which includes classics such as Maya Darpan (1972), Kasba(1991) and Khayal Gatha(1989).

Shahani always had a distinct touch in his films while his avant-garde movies are celebrated not just across India his cinematic acumen was recognized far beyond the Indian cinematic universe. Maya Darpan also won the Best Hindi Film Award.

In 2019, he also served as the Kerala State Film Chairman. He was born in 1940 in Larkana and later moved to Mumbai. He was a student of Ritwik Ghatak at the Pune Film Institute.
