CHENNAI: A recent report said that three convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, namely Murugan, Robert Pius and Jayakumar, may soon get permission to leave India. All three of them are Sri Lankan citizens. They are currently staying in a special camp in Tiruchirappalli.
The three will be taken to the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission in Chennai tomorrow to apply for travel documents as part of their release. Tiruchirappalli District Collector informed the Madras High Court about this. The Collector expressed his stand in the court on Murugan's request to be allowed to leave the country to live with his daughter in the UK.
They will be able to leave India only if Sri Lanka allows them passports and travel documents. Jayakumar, who is married to a native of Chennai, decided to stay in India.
Although the three convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case were released from jail following the Supreme Court's order in November 2022, they were shifted to a special camp in Tiruchirappalli as they had no travel documents. Shanthan, another accused in the case, died soon after getting permission to go to Sri Lanka. He died while undergoing treatment for liver disease. He died at Rajiv Gandhi Hospital, Chennai.
