LUCKNOW: Rumors are afloat about the Gandhi siblings gripped in fear about contesting elections from Uttar Pradesh. This is cited as the core reason for the congress leadership publishing the candidate list excluding the constituency of Amethi and Rae Bareli.
The Congress leadership is now in a fix after Priyanka Gandhi expressed her desire to campaign but not contest in the elections. Earlier, Priyanka Gandhi’s debut in electoral policies from Gandhi Bastion Rae Bareli was a topic that brought glee to the congress coterie. Sonia has represented Rae Bareli in the Lok Sabha since 2006. Priyanka is currently the Congress General Secretary in charge of Uttar Pradesh.
In the 2019 elections, Rae Bareli was the party's only solace in Uttar Pradesh after PM candidate Rahul Gandhi suffered an unexpected defeat from Amethi. Last day, the Congress announced the fourth phase of candidates for the Lok Sabha elections. Uttar Pradesh PCC president Ajay Rai will contest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi. 46 candidates from Assam, Andaman, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Mizoram, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, UP, Uttarakhand and Bengal have also been announced. 18 candidates for the Sikkim assembly elections are included in the list.
Former chief minister and senior leader Digvijaya Singh will be contesting from the Rajgarh constituency in Madhya Pradesh. In Tamil Nadu, Karti Chidambaram (Sivaganga), Manickam Tagore (Virudnagar) and S. Jothimani (Karur) will contest from the sitting seats.
Danish Ali, who joined the Congress the other day, was given Amroha in Uttar Pradesh, which he won under the BSP banner in 2019. However, the state leadership has expressed their disapproval of this move.
