KOCHI: A temporary worker threatened to commit suicide by climbing a tree after he was fired from the job. The incident took place at around 11 am yesterday in front of the Ernakulam Revenue Tower where the Housing Board office is located.
It was Udayamperoor native Sooraj, a temporary employee of the Housing Board, who threatened to commit suicide. He later came down after Minister K Rajan's office assured that the issue would be resolved within two days.
Sooraj was a security employee of the Housing Board for two years. The temporary employees, including Sooraj, had submitted an application at the state government's Nava Kerala Sadas demanding a hike in their daily wage. Following this, 10 people, including Sooraj, were fired from their jobs. The temporary employees have been staging an indefinite strike in front of the revenue tower demanding their reinstatement. Sooraj threatened to commit suicide as he was fed up with the delay in solving the problem.
The police and fire force reached the spot soon after learning about the incident. The police then contacted the Minister's office and informed the matter. Following this, the minister's office gave assurance that the issue would be resolved soon. The minister, who is currently in Wayanad, informed that he will meet the protesters in person after two days.
