THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state's unprecedented surge in electricity consumption is gifting headaches to KSEB. Breaking all records, the electricity consumption on Tuesday was 11.17 crore units. It is expected that the electricity demand will rise in the coming days and while the consumption will reach the summit during April end.
The consumption in March was 305.67 crore units whereas it was just 271.002 crore units in March 2023. This time, the increase is more than 34 crore units, which is considered one of the biggest jumps even at the national level. It is normal for electricity consumption to see a spike during the summer season, but the present numbers are breaking the roof and were unexpected. Minding the increasing usage, KSEB is keeping a close eye on the matter.
KSEB is relieved to be able to proceed without imposing power restrictions even as consumption surges beyond calculation. KSEB believe that the crisis could be thwarted if consumers practise minimal electricity usage from 6 pm to 12 am.
According to experts, the crisis could have been easily averted if the board had successfully implemented the smart meter plan.
