Gold worth Rs 63 lakh seized at Karipur airport, three in custody

KOZHIKODE: The police have taken into custody a passenger who tried to smuggle gold in capsule form and the two people who came to take gold from him. The police seized 887 grams of gold they tried to smuggle through the Karipur International Airport. The gold was seized from Mohammad (28), a native of Nadapuram, who arrived on an Oman Air flight from Muscat at 8:30 am on Sunday. He tried to smuggle the gold in three capsules by hiding it inside his body.

He bypassed the customs but was arrested by the police outside the airport. Sajeer (32) and Abu Salih (36), natives of Kuttyadi, who came to receive the gold from Mohammad, were also detained by the police. The police have seized the vehicle in which they were traveling and Rs 70,000 intended for Mohammad. All three are being interrogated. The seized gold is worth more than Rs 63 lakh in the domestic market.

Yesterday, the Customs Air Intelligence Department seized illegal gold worth Rs.13.4 crore from a native of Tamil Nadu at Kochi International Airport. Khader Moideen, a native of Kanyakumari, who arrived in Kochi yesterday morning from Dubai, was arrested. 2333 grams of 24 carat gold bars were hidden inside his jeans. The seized gold is worth Rs 1,74,63,340 in the domestic market.
