VARKALA: After her relatives raised doubts about the death of an elderly woman, her grave was opened and the body was taken out for a postmortem. The suspicions were regarding the death of Haleema Beevi (68), the wife of Muhammad Basheer, who was a teacher (late) and cultural worker from Therumukku in Edava. Haleema's children and other relatives lodged a complaint with the Ayiroor police, raising suspicions against a homenurse. Haleema Beevi died on May 1.
Five years ago, Haleema Beevi was suffering from a lung disease and was on artificial oxygen. A homenurse were hired through an agency when the problems due to old age increased. The home nurse, a native of Kollam's Chavara, had been staying at Haleema Beevi's house in Edava since April 16 and taking care of her. They were the only two people in the house. Haleema Beevi's two daughters are at her husband's house, while her son and another daughter are abroad.
The relatives were informed about her death by phone. After the post-mortem, relatives checked the bag in which the old lady's records were kept and found that her gold necklace, earrings, bracelet and rings kept in it were missing. Then the relatives found the goods brought from Gulf by Haleema Beevi's son from the homenurse's bag. This made them suspicious. The son had also discovered that money had been withdrawn from the old woman's account. Then the relatives lodged a complaint with the Ayiroor police. Yesterday, her grave at Aalummudu Valiyapalli was opened and the body was taken out for a post mortem at Paripally Medical College. Then in the evening, the grave was covered again.
