PERINJANAM: Police have registered a case of unnatural death in the incident where a housewife died of food poisoning after having kuzhimanthi from a restaurant in Perinjanam. Kaipamangalam police said that more charges, including homicide, will be added against the restaurant owners after receiving the post-mortem report. The police added that the current operators of the restaurant are on the run.

"We are yet to receive the reports of the Food Safety Department and the panchayat. The restaurant operators are Rafeeq and Asfar. We have intensified the investigation to find both of them," the police said.

Usaiba (56), the wife of Perinjanam native Hasbu died of food poisoning the other day. The preliminary conclusion is that the death was caused by mayonnaise that was made using eggs. Mayonnaise made using eggs was banned in the state last year following a death due to food poisoning.

Nearly 200 people who had food from Zain Hotel in Perinjanam on Saturday sought treatment at various hospitals after experiencing issues such as vomiting and diarrhoea. Most of them are natives of Perinjanam and Kaipamangalam. Several people are still undergoing treatment. Following the incident, the Health Department and the panchayat had shut down the restaurant.
