PATHANAMTHITTA: Pathanamthitta is one of those constituencies in Kerala which witnessed a triangular contest. Sitting MP Anto Antony is the UDF candidate in Pathanamthitta. Meanwhile, the LDF fielded former Finance Minister Dr Thomas Isaac as its candidate in the constituency. Anil Antony, the son of senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister AK Antony, was named the BJP candidate in Pathanamthitta.
As per the latest updates, Anto Antony is inching towards his fourth victory in Pathanamthitta. Anto currently enjoys a majority of nearly 50,000 votes over Isaac. Anil Antony, who is in the third position, did not get even two lakh votes. Thomas Isaac is the central committee member in charge of Pathanamthitta in CPM. Earlier, several exit poll surveys had predicted that he would end up in the third place.
Pathanamthitta was one of the constituencies where the BJP had high hopes. Leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had come to Pathanamthitta to campaign for Anil. Anil also had the support of PC George. However, all those factors had little effect on Anil's election result. So far, Anil managed to secure only less than 2 lakh votes.
Last time, K Surendran had secured 2,97,000 votes in the constituency. BJP had calculated that Anil would be able to get more votes than Surendran. However, the outcome proved to be a major blow to the party.
This is the fourth time Anto Antony is contesting as a UDF candidate in Pathanamthitta. Pathanamthitta constituency comprises of Poonjar, and Kanjirappally assembly constituencies in Kottayam and Aranmula, Konni, Ranni, Thiruvalla and Adoor assembly constituencies in Pathanamthitta.
