Rajnath Singh proposes Modi as NDA parliamentary party leader, key portfolios for Nitish and Naidu

NEW DELHI: The BJP-led NDA alliance has convened a meeting in the new Parliament House for the first since winning the Lok Sabha elections. Former Defense Minister Rajnath Singh proposed Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister and party leader in the meeting. Amit Shah and Nitin Gadkari supported the proposal.


Narendra Modi will be sworn in as Prime Minister on Sunday. Suresh Gopi may also take oath as Union Minister on that day. Meanwhile, Chandrababu Naidu's TDP and Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal United (JDU) will likely get key portfolios in the cabinet.


Chandrababu Naid also praised Modi, calling him the right leader for India at the right time. Modi campaigned for three months without rest, he said. After the meeting, Modi will meet the President with a claim to form a new government.

The NDA won 293 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha. The absolute majority is 272 seats. BJP got 240 seats. N Chandrababu Naidu's TDP won 16 seats, Nitish Kumar's JDU (12), Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena (7) and Chirag Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party Ram Vilas (7) helped NDA come to power for the third consecutive time.
