Conflict strong in Manipur; police outpost and houses burnt; multiple attacks in Lamtai Khunou and Modhupur

IMPHAL: Conflict that occurred after one of the attackers of the Kuki sect was killed in Manipur is spreading. Unknown assailants torched a police outpost and several houses in Jiribam district yesterday morning. The rioters who arrived in four boats through the Barak river unleashed violence. The villages of Lamtai Khunou, Dibong Khunou, Nunkhal, and Begra were the worst affected. The Jiri police outpost located in the Chotobekra area on the banks of the river was set on fire. Multiple attacks took place in Lamtai Khunou and Modhupur areas, 220 km from Imphal. About 70 houses were burnt. Security has been beefed up in the area. Meanwhile, footage of the attack also surfaced.

The attackers had killed a 59-year-old man who was one of the assailants in the Kuki section the other day. The Jiribam district administration imposed an indefinite curfew in the district, which intensified the violence. Later, 250 people belonging to the Meithi sect in the area were evacuated by the Assam Rifles in view of security. They were safely shifted to a nearby town. Jiribam, where there are not many meithis and kukis, has not been hit by violent riots since May last year.

The state government should protect the life and property of Jiribam people. I have spoken to the officials at Jiribam and requested them to ensure everyone's safety.
