IDUKKI: After a few months of tranquillity, Munnar on Sunday witnessed another case of a wild animal attack. A parade of elephants intruded into the Chokanad south division area, instilling fear among the locals. The wild elephant herd also attacked a shop run by Punyavel, a permanent resident here. The incident happened at 3 am on Sunday when the elephants entered the hugely populated area.
It is common for five elephants to visit this place often and sometimes, destroy shops in the area. A video has also emerged showing the elephants ransacking a shop. However, this time, the locals garnered some guts and chased away the elephants. As of now, the elephants have started moving towards the forest area.
Meanwhile, the forest department informed the media about strengthening measures to stop wild animal intrusion in the area. Punyavel complained that his shop faced constant attacks from wild elephant herds for more than 20 times while the authorities have always taken a stance to not pay him compensation.
