NEW DELHI: NDA is ready to re-nominate Om Birla for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker for a second time. Birla served as the speaker of Lok Sabha from 2019 to 2024 and this time, BJP decided to give the veteran politician and MP from Kota in Rajasthan yet another chance. According to reports, Om Birla will submit his nomination today.

Meanwhile, Congress leader and Mavelikara MP Kodikunnil Suresh has also filed nomination papers for the post of speaker in the upper house. This is the first time in independent India's history that a contest is taking place for electing the speaker. Earlier, rumours floated about the INDIA bloc not going to contest for the speaker post. But by fielding veteran politician Kodikunnil Suresh, the stage is set for a tough competition.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju discussed the post of Deputy Speaker but failed to reach a consensus. The members of the India Alliance boycotted the swearing-in procedure on Monday in protest over the non-appointment of Suresh, the most senior Congress MP, as the pro-tem speaker.

Opposition members came out of the Old Parliament Building (Samvidhan Bhavan) in protest holding a small-sized version of the Indian Constitution. BJP leader and seven-time member Bhartruhari Mahtab was made pro-tem speaker ignoring eight-time MP Kodikunnil Suresh.
