THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Heavy rains are likely to lash the state today. Orange alert has been issued in Pathanamthitta, Idukki and Kannur. Heavy rain has been predicted at isolated places.
Yellow alert has also been issued in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kasaragod. A chance of isolated heavy rain is forecast.
Pathanamthitta is likely to experience light to moderate rain with thundershowers at isolated places and gusty winds of up to 40 kmph during the next three hours.
Moderate rain at isolated places and gusty winds of up to 40 kmph are possible over Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur. There may be light rain at isolated places in Kasaragod.
Warning issued
Officials warned that special vigilance is needed along the coasts of Kannur and Kasaragod. High waves are likely. According to the National Oceanographic Research Center, there is a possibility of 2.1 to 3.6 meter high waves and storm surges on the coasts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod from 05.30 today evening to 11.30 tomorrow night.
There is a possibility of Kallakadal phenomenon and high waves on Kerala coast and Tamil Nadu coast till 11.30 pm tomorrow. Fishermen and coastal residents in these areas should exercise special caution. As the rough seas are likely to intensify, stay away from the danger areas as per the instructions of the authorities. Keep fishing vessels safely moored in the harbor. Keeping a safe distance between boats can avoid the possibility of collision. Safety of fishing equipment should be ensured. Avoid trips to the beach and activities at sea.
