DUBAI: A driving license is a roadblock for most expatriates wishing to work in the Gulf. Many of the expatriates complain that it is difficult to get a license in Gulf countries including UAE. Driving schools in the UAE are accused of deliberately failing the learners. The driving school owners are responding to it now.

Some expats pointed that driving schools have close relationships with the examiners. There are discussions on social media that the UAE license will empty the pockets of the expats. There is also criticism that licenses are issued in the UAE based on the preference of driving schools rather than the ability of the learner.

Meantime, the owners of the driving school have denied the allegation that they are deliberately failing the learners for money. It is a misconception that driving schools prolong the learning process for financial gains. Driving school owners said their approach is student-centered and focuses on individual progress rather than pre-set deadlines.

To obtain a driving license in the UAE, one must apply to a registered driving firm in one of the emirates. A traffic file should then be opened at an authorized driving center. After that the persons with no prior driving experience have to complete the 40 hour driving courses provided by the institution.

Learners at driving institutes are required to pass various tests of the UAE Traffic Department. It includes theory test and yard test. In addition to this an assessment test and an on-road driving test must be passed.
