Call for increased wall heights on National Highway flyovers after fatal accident

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: If the retaining walls of flyovers on the national highway continue with barely three feet height, the height of the protection walls should be increased immediately to prevent the roads from becoming a bloodbath. Simi (34) died when her scooter went out of control while travelling on the Venpalavattam flyover. This was due to the decreased height of retaining walls. This hazard is a warning to all the two-wheeler riders on the flyover.

The speed of the driven vehicle is not the only cause of the accident. Winds are generally faster in these parts now. Also, if large vehicles pass at high speed, the possibility of skidding of light weight two-wheelers increases. The higher the wall, the less serious the accident.

All the flyovers that pass over the railway tracks are taller than one person. Wherever there is no fixed height, the height is increased by grill. At least in the same model, the height of the protective walls on the roads is required. The National Highway Authority of India officials have explained that the national highway is built on the same model throughout the country. But the number of vehicles passing here is also more than other states. There are also more parts where service roads come together.

Although it is a national highway, there is no light in most places. There is light on the flyover at Kazhakoottam, but there is no light on the flyovers. Vehicles waiting at the signal are speeding by the time the signal turns green. When two-wheeled vehicles come in two lanes after the Enchakkal signal, the people driving two-wheelers on the Muttatha flyover get scared.

Action will be taken according to the report given by city police about the accident.
