Sojan Joseph, first Malayali in British Parliament; Kottayam native creates history

LONDON: While the Labour Party is all set to come to power in Britain with a huge majority, a Malayali has created history by winning a seat in the British Parliament. Kottayam native Sojan Joseph has been elected as the first Malayali MP in the history of Britain. He achieved this feat by capturing the seat held by sitting MP Damien Green for the last 27 years. A native of Kaipuzha in Kottayam, Sojan is a councillor at Ashford Borough Council and head of mental health nursing at the NHS.

By the time the results of one-third of the seats in the 650-member British parliament were announced, the Labour Party had crossed an absolute majority of 325. The Labour Party has presently won 359 seats. The Conservative Party managed to win only 72 seats. The Conservative Party lost 172 seats compared to 2019. The Labour Democrat Party is in third place with 46 seats. According to a report by the BBC, the Labour Party will get 408 seats and the Conservative Party 136 seats. Reports said the Labour Democrat Party will be in the third place with 66 seats.

Keir Starmer of the Labor Party is all set to be the Prime Minister. Starmer won his Holborn and St Pancras seat. Keir Starmer thanked people for voting for the Labour Party. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak concedes defeat of the Conservative Party. Sunak congratulated Starmer on the phone. Sunak retained the Richmond and Northern Allerton seat.
