NEW DELHI: Congress has submitted a breach of privilege notice against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for allegedly insulting former Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari during a speech in the Lok Sabha. It was AICC general secretary and Rajya Sabha member Jairam Ramesh who wrote a letter to Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar seeking breach of privilege proceedings against Modi.

In his speech during the Motion of Thanks to the President's address on July 3, Modi had said that when the NDA government came to power in 2014, the then Rajya Sabha chairman was more inclined towards the opposition.

In his letter, Jairam Ramesh alleged that making a derogatory remark against a former Rajya Sabha chairman in his absence was tantamount to grace disregard and disrespect” to the high office of the Chairman and the Rajya Sabha. He also pointed out that the allegation against the Speaker was a violation of the rules of the House and action should be taken against Modi.
