HYDERABAD: Railway staff were stunned when they saw a car speeding through the railway track. Though they tried to stop it, the vehicle didn't stop. Shouting in alarm, the staff ran after it. Eventually, the car came to a stop after crashing into a tree beside the track. The car was driven by a woman who was under the influence of alcohol. Railway workers detained her and handed her over to the police.
The incident took place the other day in Telangana, near the Kodangal gate in Shankarpally, Ranga Reddy district. The woman, Vomika Soni (32), an IT professional from Uttar Pradesh, drove a white SUV for over seven kilometres along the railway track. Video footage of the incident has gone viral on social media.
Train services were disrupted for about half an hour as a result of the incident. Nearly 15 trains had to be diverted. Police have filed a case against the woman. She is currently undergoing medical treatment. In her statement, she claimed she doesn't remember what happened. Authorities will investigate whether she has any mental health issues. The railways have launched an inquiry into the incident. Charges will be filed for dangerous driving under the influence of alcohol, trespassing on railway property, disrupting train services, and causing damage to property.
