Gareth Southgate resigns as England manager after Euro final loss

LONDON: England football team head coach Gareth Southgate has stepped down from his position after losing in the final of the Euro Cup 2024. In 2016, Southgate, who is also a former player of England, took over as the head coach of the national team. He coached the team in 102 matches. During his time as the coach, England won 61 matches, drew 24 matches and lost only 17.

Not only did the team reach the finals in the 2021 and 2024 Euro Cups, they also played in the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and reached the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup. Southgate was turn around the outlook of English football team with great results. In the final of the last Euro Cup, the English team lost to Italy in a penalty shootout.

Southgate was a reliable defensive midfielder between 1995 and 2004. He played 57 matches for the country. It was Southgate who missed England's final penalty kick in the penalty shootout against Germany in the semi-finals of the 1996 Eurocup. He played for England in the 1998 World Cup and the 2000 Euro Cup.

In the recently concluded Euros, England lost to Spain in the final by two goals to one. Nico Williams scored in the second minute of the second half, but substitute Cole Palmer equalized in the 73rd minute. Michael Oyarzabal's goal in the 86th minute proved to be the difference between the two sides.
