Four members of notorious 'Bappayum Makkalum' gang held in Kochi

KOCHI: The Ernakulam Central Police on Sunday arrested the notorious ‘Bappayum Makkalum’ gang of Kozhikode city. Fazil (23), son of Fasaluddin from Chakkumkadavu; Mohammad Taif (20), Shahid (20) and Gokul (21), all from Kozhikode, of the notorious gang were arrested.

The group gained infamy for the series of thefts led by the father and undertaken by his sons. The son and his accomplices were arrested on Saturday. The gang tried to steal a bike from a house on Providence Road, Ernakulam, only after they stole a mobile phone and a watch from another firm in the nearby area.

The arrested Taif is accused of 14 theft cases. After committing housebreaking, breaking into temple vaults, bike thefts and ransacking supermarkets in Thamarassery, Koyilandy and Vadakara, the gang escaped to Bengaluru. It was only on Saturday that the police received secret information that the group had reached Kochi.

At present, almost six cases are pending against the accused.

The accused have already confessed to the police about the location from which they stole two bikes in Koyilandy. The accused had stolen Rs 68,000 and four mobile phones from a micro lab in Thamarassery. The mobile phone was recovered yesterday.

The gang confessed to stealing one and a half lakh rupees, a mobile phone from Central Bazar, and also a Royal Enfield bike and a scooter from the Koyilandy station area. It is confirmed that the gang also committed theft in Bengaluru before heading back to Kochi.

The accused were produced in court and remanded. The arrest was led by Central Police Sub-Inspectors C Anoop and Shahina.
