WAYANAD: Two Belgian Malinois cadaver dogs named Maya and Murphy will be brought to the disaster land in Wayanad. Both dogs are experts at tracing buried bodies and body parts. They can scent the human body and body parts lying up to a depth of 40 feet.

A police team has left for Mundakkai with the dogs and will reach soon. The two were trained at the Kerala Police Academy in Thrissur. The dogs are very energetic and wise and can work continuously for hours without rest.

Maya had earlier traced eight bodies buried deep under the debris in the land that struck Pettimudi in 2020. After just three months of training, Maya embarked on that mission. Murphy was with Maya to find four bodies in the landslide that hit Kokkayar.

A major disaster struck Wayanad early this morning. It is reported that many are trapped underground. So, the help of the police dogs is needed. There were houses on both sides of the river. All the houses in this area have been completely washed away. The death toll in the Wayanad disaster has crossed 57. Heavy rains are hampering the rescue operations.
