NEW DELHI: Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor expressed strong words of resentment over Vinesh Phogat’s decision to retire from the sport.

'She is tired of this system; she is tired of fighting'. wrote Shashi Tharoor on X platform.

Many political elites are now beseeching the wrestler to reconsider her decision to quit the sport. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi described Vinesh Phogat as a symbol of strength and courage.

“We are with you in this difficult time,” wrote Gaurav on X.

“I don't have the strength anymore. Goodbye Wrestling 2001 - 2024. I will forever be indebted to you all. I'm sorry” This was Vinesh's retirement announcement made on Thursday morning on her X page. Yesterday, Vinesh was disqualified from the women's 50kg freestyle final due to her weight gain of 100 grams.

If not for the controversy, Vinesh would have scripted history by being the first Indian women wrestler to win a silver or gold medal in the Olympics. Meanwhile, Phogat has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to share the silver medal. The court will rule on the appeal on Thursday. If the verdict is in Vinesh's favour, the Olympic Committee will share the silver medal between the two.
