NEDUMANGAD: A housewife died of rabies after suffering a scratch on her hand caused by the nail of her pet dog. The deceased has been identified as Jaini (44), the wife of Chenthapporu native Sunil Kumar. She died on Friday while undergoing treatment at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College

.

Two and a half months ago, Jaini's pet dog had bitten her daughter. Jaini also got a scratch on her hand from the dog's nail. Although the daughter went to the hospital and took the vaccine on the very same day, Jaini neither told anyone about the scratch on her hand nor took the vaccine against rabies. The dog died a month later. Three days ago, Jaini fell unwell and sought treatment at a private hospital. As her condition worsened the next day, she was referred to the General Hospital. She was shifted to the Medical College on Thursday after the doctors suspected that she was suffering from rabies. Although the doctors started treatment after confirming that Jaisy was rabies-infected, they were not able to save her life.

The funeral took place at Shanthitheeram in Kallampara as per the directions of the health workers. Children: Anumol, Ancy.
