CBI takes over investigation of trainee doctor's murder in Kolkata

KOLKATA: A CBI team has arrived in Kolkata to investigate the brutal murder of the trainee doctor at government medical college. The team, which includes forensic and medical experts, travelled from Delhi and is expected to visit the crime scene. They are also likely to hold a detailed meeting with the Kolkata Police to review the progress of the investigation so far.

The Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the case to the CBI yesterday. Within hours of the court's directive, the CBI officially took over the investigation. The BJP welcomed the court’s decision, calling it a significant blow to the state government and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Meanwhile, doctors remain on strike in West Bengal and other states across the country in response to the incident.

New information has emerged that the accused, Sanjay Roy, is a boxer. Reports also reveal that Roy, despite having been married four times, had all his wives leave him due to unbearable torture.

The court handed the case to the CBI, criticizing the state government and the police for their handling of the investigation. It also condemned the resignation of Principal Dr Sandeep Ghosh from the college where the incident occurred, only to be appointed as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College within 12 hours—a move the court equated to a reward. The court has ordered Dr. Ghosh to go on leave, asserting that no one is above the law.

The case was initially registered as an unnatural death, a decision the court found troubling. The court expressed concern that the hospital authorities, including the principal, did not support the victim and her family and that no formal complaint was lodged by the principal. The court underscored the gravity of the situation and clarified that Principal Dr Ghosh should remain at home during the investigation.

The High Court bench, comprising Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmayi Bhattacharya, stated that the investigation is being handed over to the CBI to ensure justice for the victim’s family and to restore public confidence.
