THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government introduced relaxation in auto-rickshaw permit rules in the state. From now on, auto rickshaws will be able to operate all over Kerala. The concession in the permit is based on the request made by the CITU Kannur Madayi Area Committee of the Autorickshaw Union.

Despite the warnings of increased accident chances, the Transport Authority decided to go ahead with the decision. Until now, autorickshaws were allowed to travel only 20 km from the district border. Permits were restricted minding the risk of accidents in running autos on long-distance services.

The permit system will be changed to 'Autorickshaw in the State'. Auto rickshaws must be registered as state permit holders to avail of permit exemption. There is also a requirement that the driver must ensure the safety of the passengers. The decision was taken by the IG in charge of traffic of the Transport Commissioner and the Secretary of the Authority.

Auto rickshaws are not designed for long-distance travel. They come without seat belts which increases the chances of accidents. The maximum speed allowed for autos on roads is 50 kmph. The official meeting also assessed that autos plying on expressways, and long-distance service will cause major accidents. However, the authorities went ahead with the decision rejecting all the warnings.
