Female health worker attacked by patient; fractured hand and injury above eye reported

KOZHIKODE: Female nurse at Kuthiravattom Mental Health Centre brutally beaten up by inmate. The nurse suffered a fractured hand and a cut above her eye in the attack by the male patient. The seriously injured female nurse has been admitted to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. The incident took place in the seventh ward around 2 am on Sunday.

The nurse came to give medicine and an injection when the patient showed violent behaviour. When the nurse returned after giving the medicine and injection, the screaming patient kicked the nurse from behind. The impact of the fall caused the nurse's hand to hit the iron grill adjacent to the nearby wall and fractured it. Her face was also injured by hitting the same grill.

The mental patient got violent by pushing the security personnel who were with the nurse. There are about six stitches on the nurse's wound. The Kerala Government Nurses Association came forward to protest this incident. Kozhikode District Secretary P Prajith and President Smitha demanded that the hospital authorities take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of the nursing section staff. Both of them demanded that the security system should be strengthened urgently. Kuthiravattom Mental Health Center is currently short of 20 security personnel.
