Health insurance of five lakh rupees for all above 70 years of age; approval for Ayushman Bharat Jan Arogya Yojana

NEW DELHI: All citizens above the age of 70 years in the country will be provided health cover of five lakh rupees, without any socio-economic limit. The Union Cabinet has approved the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (ABPMJAY) for this purpose. About 4.5 crore families with six crore senior citizens will get a cover of five lakh rupees. This was an announcement in the Union Budget.

ABPMJAY, the world's largest publicly funded health insurance scheme, covers 55 crore individuals in 12.34 crore households with a coverage of five lakh rupees per annum.

  • Special insurance card for senior citizens
  • Additional coverage of up to five lakh rupees per annum for those aged 70 years and above in existing families under Ayushman Yojana
  • The benefit need not be shared with other members of the family.
  • Those above 70 years of age who are members of other schemes such as CGHS, ECHS for Ex-Servicemen, CAPF etc. can continue in them or switch to ABPMJAY.
  • Private health insurance policy and ESI members are also eligible for the new scheme.
