KOLLAM: In a tragic incident yesterday evening, a scooter rider, Kunjumol, was killed after being struck by a car driven by Ajmal, a local with a criminal record. Kunjumol and her cousin Fauzia were crossing the road on a scooter when Ajmal’s vehicle rammed into them. The collision caused both women to be thrown off the scooter, and as locals rushed to the scene, Ajmal allegedly drove over Kunjumol’s body and fled.

Despite being taken to a nearby private hospital, Kunjumol succumbed to her injuries at around 9:45 p.m. Fauzia remains under medical treatment for her injuries.

Ajmal, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time, has a criminal history, with eight prior cases against him, including theft, destruction of public property and fraud. The police have registered a case of culpable homicide against him. His friend, Dr Sreekutty, who was also in the car, is expected to be charged as an accused. Another young woman, reportedly their friend, is being questioned at the Shashtamkotta police station.

According to the police, Ajmal and Dr. Sreekutty were returning from a party at a friend’s house when the accident occurred. A medical examination revealed that both were intoxicated at the time of the incident.

After the accident, Ajmal attempted to flee but was stopped by locals. He abandoned the car and escaped on foot, while Dr. Sreekutty sought refuge in a nearby house. The police later took her into custody.

Authorities have noted that if Ajmal had heeded the pleas of the bystanders to stop after the initial collision, Kunjumol, who initially sustained only minor injuries, might have survived. In the aftermath of the incident, Dr. Sreekutty was reportedly terminated from her job.
