Mynagappally hit and run; murder case filed against Ajmal and Sreekutty; Human Rights Commission registers suo motu cognisance

KOLLAM: The Human Rights Commission has registered a suo motu case in connection with the incident in which a car rammed into a scooter at Anoorkavu in Mynagappally and ran over the body of the scooter rider woman who fell on the road. Commission member VK Beena Kumari asked the Kollam district police chief to submit a report within two weeks.

VK Beena Kumari said she was surprised by reports that a female doctor who understood the seriousness of her mistake was in the car that drove away after causing the accident. The police had taken the woman doctor and the vehicle's driver into custody. The media had reported that the two were drunk. The commission took suo motu cognisance of the case based on media reports.

The arrests of Karunagappally native Ajmal and Neyyattinkara native Dr Sreekutty have been recorded. Both have been charged with culpable homicide. Dr Sreekutty was taken into custody by the police in connection with yesterday's accident and was being questioned. Ajmal, who went into hiding following the accident, was arrested by the Sasthamkotta police from Patharam today.

Kunjumol, a native of Mynagappally, died after being hit by the car driven by Ajmal yesterday. Ajmal and the woman doctor who was with him escaped after running over Kunjumol who fell on the road.
