Kollam hit and run case: Accused and lady doctor were drunk

MYNAGAPPALLY: In a horrific incident, a woman was killed after being hit and run over by a car driven by a drunken youth. The deceased is Kunjumol (45), the wife of Mynagappally native Naushad.

Police arrested Karunagappally native Muhammad Ajmal (27) and Neyyattinkara native Dr Sreekutty (27) who were travelling together in the Hyundai Eon car. Ajmal, who was driving, is accused in several cases, including sandalwood smuggling. Medical examination revealed that both Ajmal and Sreekutty were under the influence of alcohol when the incident took place.

The accident occurred on Thiruvonam day at 5:47 pm at the Mynagappally Aanoorkavu junction. Kunjumol was returning home with her brother-in-law's wife, Fousiya, after buying new clothes from a shop in Aanoorkavu. She was crossing the road on her scooter when Ajmal's car, which came from the Sasthamcotta side, hit her scooter.

After being thrown onto the road, Kunjumol came under the front wheel of the car that had hit her. Despite the loud cries from the people present at the scene, Ajmal reversed the car and then drove forward, running over Kunjumol's body, before speeding away without stopping.

The car initially moved forward twice but did not run over Kunjumol's body. However, within a minute, Ajmal reversed the car again for the third time and drove it over Kunjumol's body before speeding away. The people present at the scene immediately rushed Kunjumol to a private hospital in Karunagappally. However, she was soon declared dead.

After being chased by the people present at the scene, Ajmal abandoned the car near the Karunagappally court and escaped by jumping over a wall. The woman doctor, who had run into a nearby house, was taken into custody by the police. Ajmal was later arrested by the Shasthamkotta police from his friend's house in Sooranad early yesterday morning.
