NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted bail to Pulsar Suni, the first accused in the actor assault case. The apex court said the bail is being granted as the trial is being prolonged. Suni had earlier approached the high court seeking bail, but the plea was dismissed. He later approached the Supreme Court. Suni was arrested on February 23 in 2017. He has not been granted bail since then. The government had opposed granting him bail.
Suni, who has been in jail for nearly seven years, has filed bail pleas ten times in the high court alone. The Supreme Court had earlier granted bail to Martin Antony, the second accused in the case in which actor Dileep was also accused.
The Kerala government had given an affidavit that if Suni was granted bail, the visuals would be made public. The government also pointed out that if Suni is granted bail, there may be an attempt to subvert the trial proceedings. However, the Supreme Court rejected all this and granted bail to Suni.
Pulsar Suni told the court that there was no fair trial in the case. Pulsar Suni argued that Dileep's lawyer is prolonging the trial. The actress was attacked in a car in Kochi in February 2017. Pulsar Suni was arrested in the case registered by Nedumbassery police.
