Nehru Trophy; Conflict after result announcement, police registers case against 100 people

ALAPPUZHA: Alappuzha North Police have registered a case against 100 people who have been involved in the dispute over the Nehru Trophy boat race held yesterday. The case is related to the incident that took place at Nehru Pavilion yesterday. A case has been registered under the sections of unlawful assembly, obstruction of freedom of movement and obscenity.

After an exciting match yesterday, Karichal Chundan won the Cup. With this, Pallathuruthy Boat Club has made history as the first club to win the cup five times consecutively in the 70th Nehru Trophy. In the photo finish, Karichal overtook Veeyapuram Chudan. At first there was doubt whether Veeyapuram or Karichal was ahead. It was later that there was an allegation that there was an error in the result determination and there was a dispute. Veeyapuram Chundan lost by a margin of five microseconds. But the Kainakari Boat Club, which rowed Veeyapuram Chundan, stated that it will approach the court for the decision of the result.

The competition, which was awaited by boat race enthusiasts, started yesterday at 3.30 pm. A total of 19 chundan boats were changed in five heats. The four teams that finished in the shortest time in the heats race qualified for the finals. Chundan boats from Karichal, Veeyapuram, Niranam and Nadubhagham competed in the finals.

The competition, which was postponed to August 10 due to the Wayanad disaster, was held yesterday. 72 boats including 19 Chundan boats participated in the competition. Thousands came to witness the match.
