THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Central Meteorological Department has informed that this year's southwest monsoon has passed away and the northeast monsoon has started. The onset of the northeast monsoon was confirmed by the onset of east-northeasterly winds over south India and over the Bay of Bengal. While the southwest monsoon departed on the usual date, the northeast monsoon arrived earlier this time.
A strong low pressure area is located in the central part of the Southwest Bay of Bengal. According to IMD, it is very likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a deep depression during the next 24 hours.
A cyclonic circulation is located over the southern Andhra coast in the central west Bay of Bengal. A low pressure over the central-western Arabian Sea is likely to intensify into a deep depression during the next six hours. Due to these reasons, there is a possibility of widespread rains in Kerala in the next one week. A red alert has been sounded in the coastal areas of Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts as there is a possibility of strong waves and Kallakadal (swell surge waves) phenomenon.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert in these districts. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted at isolated places. According to IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall means rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours.

The Central Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert in these districts. Isolated heavy rainfall is predicted. Heavy rainfall means a situation where rainfall ranges from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours. Rain accompanied by lightning is expected.
