NEW DELHI: Supreme Court stays Child Rights Commission recommendations against madrassas. The Supreme Court has issued notices to the central and state governments seeking details. The Child Rights Commission has recommended the closure of madrassas that do not implement the Right to Education Act. Governments of Uttar Pradesh and Tripura have already stepped into this process. The petition was filed by Jamiat Ulama Hind questioning the UP-government’s action.
The National Child Rights Commission has directed that financial assistance to madrassas and madrassa boards be stopped. The commission chairman Priyank Kanung had written to the chief secretaries stating that the method of education in madrassas violates the Right to Education Act and constitutional rights. It was also recommended that the madrassa boards should be closed down. In the letter, it was also suggested that madrassa students should be given education as per law.
Priyank Kanung also stated that the proposal is based on the Supreme Court's order staying the Allahabad High Court's order quashing the Madrasa Education Board Act in Uttar Pradesh and the study report of the Child Rights Commission. The study report of the National Child Rights Commission had also said that children are being exploited in madrassas in Kerala.
