WAYANAD: Priyanka Gandhi, the fifth-generation member of the Nehru family, is set to make her electoral debut in the historic constituency of Wayanad. Many see the face of grandmother Indira Gandhi when Priyanka, 52, arrives in Wayanad. If she wins this election, Priyanka will join her mother and brother in the Parliament.
Priyanka had previously visited Wayanad twice - during Rahul Gandhi's first and second election campaigns. She will submit her nomination papers on Wednesday. Her mother Sonia Gandhi has arrived in Wayanad to witness Priyanka submit her papers. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Chief Ministers and other Congress leaders have also arrived in Wayanad.
Priyanka had campaigned for her mother and brother in Amethi and Raebareli. After Priyanka Gandhi's marriage to Robert Vadra in 1997, speculation suggested she was unlikely to enter politics. However, subsequent political developments led her to reconsider. It was on June 17 that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced that Priyanka would contest in Wayanad.
