RIYADH: The verdict regarding the release of Abdul Rahim, a resident of Kodampuzha in Kozhikode, who has been in a Saudi Arabian prison for the past 18 years, is expected to be announced today. The Saudi court's decision is anticipated around 1 PM Indian time.
Reports indicate that there is little likelihood of his imprisonment being extended. The prosecution is also expected to inform the court of this development.
Rahim, who was initially sentenced to death, saw his penalty overturned by the Riyadh Criminal Court after the family of the murder victim, Anas Al-Shahri, agreed to accept ‘diya’ (blood money) in exchange for his release. A sum of 1.5 million Saudi Riyals (approximately Rs 34 crore) was transferred to the family via the Ministry of External Affairs. This amount was sourced from over Rs 47 crore raised by the Trust.
Fathima, visited him in prison. Speaking to the media afterward, she shared an emotional account of their meeting:
"I met Rahim. There was both joy and sorrow. He came, hugged me and cried. He asked why I came all the way to see him when it should have been him coming to see me. He said he didn’t want me to remember this moment, only to look forward to his return. It was a bittersweet reunion. I am eagerly waiting for the day he comes back home."
