KOCHI: A consensus has been reached in discussions held between Muslim League leaders and the Latin Church leadership, who have been at the forefront of the Munambam Waqf land protest. Speaking to the media after the meeting, both sides stated that they would communicate the consensus proposal to the Chief Minister during the high-level meeting convened by the state government on the 22nd.
Varapuzha Archdiocese Major Archbishop Joseph Kalathiparambil welcomed the League's consensus move. He said that he would take the initiative to resolve the issue amicably.
League president Sayyid Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal, national general secretary PK Kunhalikutty and others reached the Varapuzha Bishop's House in Kochi at 3 pm yesterday. The meeting with the Archbishop lasted for two hours.
The meeting held by the League leaders on the crucial day of the finale of the public campaign for the Palakkad by-election is seen as a political move.
The Latin Church expressed its gratitude to Muslim League leaders for coming to the meeting and showing solidarity with the residents of Munambam. PK Kunhalikutty said that Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal had called a meeting of the Farook College committees and all Muslim organisations and that the meeting had demanded the League take the initiative to solve the issue.
"The issue will be solved very soon. The meeting ended with a clear vision to resolve the issue," Kunhalikutty said.
