KOCHI: Rare bird species worth lakhs in today's market were seized from Nedumbassery International Airport on Monday. Two natives of Thiruvananthapuram were caught with 14 species of exotic birds, including a rare hornbill. Birds worth Rs 25,000 to Rs 2 lakh were seized from the accused. Sarath and Bindu, natives of Thiruvananthapuram, were arrested and it was found that the duo brought the birds illegally to the country from Thailand.

The customs officer became suspicious of their behaviour which led to the seizure of the illegal contraband. The officials decided to open Bindu's and Sarath's luggage and check it in detail. When the suitcase was opened, the raucous sounds of birds flapping came to the officer's attention. This led to a strong search.

The birds have been handed over to the forest department for expert checks and further action. Officials also informed that Kochi Customs and Forest Department will conduct further investigation into the incident.
